Maryam & Menna - "Set a Good Example"

During a conflict, it's easy to let our emotions take control.

Maryam and Menna, two middle school students at Malik Academy, have personal experience. "You have this urge to just go and yell out everything you're feeling inside," explains Maryam. "If you did that, it would just be chaos."

Menna's advice is to take a moment to think, and then set a good example: "Be the person who calms the conversation down."

Going against your urge to "talk back" and escalate the situation can be difficult, but for these students, leadership means "being the better person"—a role model for others who may be struggling.

Many adults struggle with emotions in a conflict.

Hope's work is to empower teens to develop leadership skills early—and to share their experience with their peers around the network.
