Fortunately, Optimism is the Same Around the World

William Shakespeare famously wrote in his classic tragedy Romeo and Juliet:

“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”

We feel the same about “Optimism.” Optimism is a critical element of success for kids becoming leaders. Success research suggests that three essential attitudes exist for young people to reach their full potential—enthusiasm, dedication, and optimism.

Fortunately, optimism looks, sounds, and smells the same - and as sweet - in India, as it does in the United States. In Africa as it does in Latin America.

Today, we feature Suzanne and Nihar in our Hope Clip from the Presidency School in Nizamabad, India describing the power of optimism in their leadership development work.

“An optimist,” Suzanne explains, “sees an opportunity where others see uncertainty and despair.” The kids describe the power of owning their conflicts, and committing to resolving them using essential leadership skills.

Hope Collaborative is proud to serve the Boys and Girls Club of Dorchester.

Dorchester, Massachusetts is the largest and most diverse neighborhood of Boston. Our BGCD partners there serve the local community with 3 clubhouses and over 200 groups and activities with children ages 5-18.

Today in Hope's featured video, you get to meet Nayeliz, one of our young developing leaders.

Watch as Nayeliz explains how she was drawn to our Conflict Resolution program. Our promise was to help her use an innate ability to create art to drive her leadership development.

Nayeliz enjoys drawing and expressing herself visually. You can see it in her energy, and in her presentation style that naturally emanates from her love of the visual. For Nayeliz, self-expression is the core of being a leader. It is what drives her interest in style and fashion, and also her confidence and self esteem.

Self expression through art is the leadership skill she feels she most possesses.

“I can really express myself,” she says. “That’s how I’m a leader.”

Meet Ronan

Watching young people describe how they have overcome significant challenges can change you.

It is in some ways a reminder that we are all the results of our life crucibles--the deepest challenges--and chapters that are sometimes miserable, but where we persevere.

Meet Ronan. In this young teen's life, it was a journey through put downs and derision that brought today's featured Hope teen to ask his parents to advocate for him, to find a new supportive education setting, and to help him put his learning challenges in perspective.

Imagine being told that you're lazy, because you are struggling to express yourself.

Or told to try harder, because you have a significant challenge focusing.

We found hope--and Ronan--at our Boys and Girls Clubs of Dorchester partner last fall.

Ronan found his unique leadership story in his work with his parents, with BGCD, and with Hope.

He reports that he is now flourishing.

And now so confident that he can be seen giving advice to the country's top leadership.
Check it out!

Aja on How to Have Difficult Conversations

Having difficult conversations is hard.

Emotions often run high. People in difficult conversations fear escalation, loss, and other damaging consequences of discussing real and meaningful differences.

Research suggests that most leaders avoid difficult conversations. So, when teens like Aja deliver clear directions for how to have a tough conversation, we are heartened that young leaders are starting to make a real difference in their communities

We had the privilege of working with Aja, a talented young teen leader at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Dorchester. Located in one of the most diverse neighborhoods of Boston, BGCD serves its community with 3 clubhouses and youth programming such as Hope’s leadership development programming.

Watch the video. Alongside a knowing smile, she shares her experience working with Hope--and the lessons she learned about communication and its role in conflict resolution.

“If you’re in a bad situation,” she explains, “you use your words and your thoughts to explain yourself.” The hardest part of implementing healthy communication with a potential adversary, she continues, is that, “You have to learn how to place yourself in their shoes to understand what they’re saying… Sometimes it’s hard because you understand them, but they’re not understanding what you’re trying to say.”
